A Lifestyle of Open Hands
"Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments!" - Psalm 112:1
Our culture constantly tells us to accumulate more and hold tightly to what we have. We are taught that financial security comes from building higher walls and bigger storehouses. God offers a completely different vision for our resources. He invites us to view everything we possess through the lens of His kingdom and to hold our blessings with open hands.
Psalm 112 paints a beautiful picture of someone who fears the Lord and delights in His commands. This deep reverence for God produces a life filled with the fruit of righteousness. One of the clearest signs of this spiritual fruit is outrageous generosity. Biblical generosity is not just an occasional act of charity or a rare event. It is a complete lifestyle.
Because God freely gave His only Son to save us, we understand that the gospel itself is a story of incredible generosity. When this truth takes root in your heart, it changes how you manage your resources. You begin to see your wealth not as something to hoard, but as a tool to bless others and build things that carry eternal significance. Outrageous generosity leads to multiplied opportunities for ministry. It allows us to participate in the great work God is doing around the world.
Think about a time you watched a child tightly clutch a favorite toy. They refuse to share because they fear losing what brings them joy. As adults, we often treat our finances the exact same way. We worry about bad news, economic changes, or unexpected bills. We let fear dictate our generosity.
Yet, the psalmist writes that the righteous person is unafraid of bad news. Their heart is steady and secure in the Lord. When you truly trust that God is your ultimate provider, a profound shift happens. You stop letting your spending dictate your giving. Instead, your giving begins to guide your spending. To the watching world, this open-handed living looks completely foolish. Some may even criticize your choices. But to God, this level of trust is a beautiful act of worship.
Take a close look at your financial habits this week. Ask God to show you where you might be gripping your resources tightly out of fear. Choose one specific step to grow in your generosity. If you rarely give, make your first intentional contribution to your local church or a trusted ministry. If you already give regularly, pray about increasing that amount or supporting a new kingdom opportunity. Let your financial decisions reflect your complete trust in the Lord.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unmatched generosity toward us. You gave everything to rescue us. Please forgive us for the times we hold tightly to our resources out of fear or selfishness. Teach us to delight in Your commands and trust deeply in Your daily provision. Give us the courage to live a lifestyle of outrageous generosity. Use our open hands to build Your kingdom and bless those around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
