Unstoppable Grace: Breaking Down Barriers
While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. - Acts 10:44
If you grew up in a neighborhood without fences, you likely remember how kids played together across conjoined yards. It was an open adventure. Today, we often build tall wooden barriers around our homes to keep others out. This drift toward privacy and personal protection easily bleeds into our spiritual lives. We build social and religious barriers to keep people at a safe distance. However, as we see in the story of Peter and Cornelius, the Holy Spirit is entirely focused on tearing down the fences we build around the Gospel.
1. Break Down the Barriers
When Peter opens his mouth in this passage, he acknowledges a fundamental biblical truth. God shows no partiality. Following the Lord was never meant to be an exclusive club for a select few. From the very beginning, God intended to bless all the families of the earth. Peter realizes that anyone from any nation who fears God and follows His ways by faith can be saved. We often hide behind the fences of our differences, our biases, and our fears. If we want to join God on His mission, we must allow the Spirit to eliminate every barrier we hold against others.
2. Proclaim the Gospel Unapologetically
With a captive audience in the home of Cornelius, Peter gets straight to the point. He unapologetically proclaims the truth about God's Son. He shares how Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit, how He performed miracles, how He died, and how He rose again after three days. Peter simply declares that everyone who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness of sins through His name. We must model our own Gospel proclamation the exact same way. You do not need to be a polished speaker to share the truth. You just need to open your mouth, point to what Jesus has done, and let the Spirit do the heavy lifting in their hearts.
3. Foster an Uncommon Community
As Peter preaches, something absolutely profound happens. The Holy Spirit falls on the Gentiles just as He did on the Jewish believers in Jerusalem. This creates a beautiful, uncommon community of God's people. Both the Romans and the Jews had to lay down their social and religious elitism. It took immense humility for them to worship God together by faith and participate in baptism as one family.
The call of salvation brings us out of our isolated sin and into a vibrant family of faith. We must resist the drift into private religion and actively invite others into this diverse community.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, we praise You because You show no partiality. Please help us to tear down the fences we have built around our hearts and our lives. Give us the boldness to unapologetically proclaim the good news of Jesus to everyone we encounter. Guide us by Your Spirit to foster an uncommon community that welcomes all who seek You. We ask this in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
